For over forty years, Sheila has devoted her career to design innovation for healthcare facilities throughout the world, with an emphasis on improving the patient, family and staff experience. Sheila is a proven leader who understands how to build and sustain growth through client relationships and staff mentorship. Her advancements in the medical planning of inpatient rooms and units have been adopted throughout the US.
From critical access hospitals to major academic medical centers, Cahnman has planned and managed innovative healthcare projects of all sizes and scope in the US, Turkey and the UAE. She spent the first 22 years of her career at HLM Design (Hansen Lind Meyer) rising from intern architect to Chicago office managing principal. At HLM, she was Principal-in- Charge and lead medical planner on multi-year renovations for the Rush Medical Center system (Illinois), Danbury Hospital (Connecticut) and Methodist Hospitals (Northern Indiana). She was the Principal-in-Charge for the University of Chicago Hospital’s new Comer Children’s Hospital and lead medical planner for the new 560,000 SF Medical Center of the Rockies in Colorado. In 2004, Cahnman joined HOK as Chicago Healthcare Leader. She led the medical planning for major new expansion projects for Loyola University Medical Center (Maywood, IL), Healtheast (St. Paul, MN), Beaumont Hospitals (Detroit, MI), Advocate Health (Illinois) and University of Missouri. She was Project Director for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center $466 m expansion project. In 2013, Cahnman became the Healthcare Market Sector Leader for AECOM, responsible for innovation, medical planning and strategy in North America. Her global portfolio included clinic designs in Dubai and ongoing peer review of megaprojects in Turkey. In 2014, Cahnman founded JumpGarden Consulting to further contribute to the healthcare design industry through thought leadership and mentorship. Education: University of Pennsylvania, M. Arch.
